Abstract. The article is dedicated to the little-known and little-studied Ukrainian public figure, historian, folklorist, organizer of the cooperative movement in Ukraine Vasily Domanitsky. His figure was in sight of many researchers, but folklore scholar activities have not yet found a thorough coverage of this topic. Therefore, the relevance of the chosen topic is determined by the need of deep understanding of the folkloristic heritage of V. Domanitsky, which will serve to create an objective concept of the process of historical development of Ukrainian science. The author of the article aims to summarize the results of previous searches, based on the published works of V. Domanitsky and archival materials, to analyze his folkloristic activity, to highlight the scientific methods of the research, the principles of recording, systematization, classification, textology, commenting on folklore samples, to determine the real contribution of the scientist to the Ukrainian folklore. The tasks were solved using descriptive, comparative-typological and comparative-historical scientific methods. The chronological framework of the study is the end of the XIX-th and the beginning of the XX-th century, where V. Domanitsky is represented as a Ukrainian public figure and folklorist in the context of the national revival of that time. The resource basis of the research is published and manuscript materials related to the life and folklore activities of V. Domanitsky, which are stored in the National Library of Ukraine named after V. Vernatsky (NBUV) of the National Academy of Sciences and other scientific libraries, in manuscript funds of the Institute of Manuscripts of the NBUV, Institute of art history, folklore and ethnology named after M. Rylsky (IIFE) NASU, Institute of Literature NASU. According to the results of the analysis, it was established that the scientist showed a deep understanding of the theoretical and methodological problems of folklore and clearly dissociated popular folklore publications from scientific ones, while publishing folk records he consistently adhered to the principle of authenticity, conveying in detail the peculiarities of Volyn dialect and indicating the names of the settlements where the notes were made. It is worth issuing his archival folklore records and communicating to the general public the correspondence and the richness of his creative heritage, in order to cultivate a love of Ukraine based on the example of the scientist’s biography.

Keywords: Vasiliy Domanitsky, public figure, folklore, popular science studios, folklore records, national revival.
