THE JEWISH POPULATION OF GALICIAIN THE MEMOIRS OF IVAN MAKUKH

Abstract. Introduction. A historical understanding of interethnic relations in Galicia was an essential element of the state-building vision of Ukrainian public and political figures in the first half of the twentieth century. Their analyses laid the groundwork for socio-political, economic and cultural interaction among the various nationalities of the Habsburg Monarchy.

Problem Statement. The «Jewish question» became particularly pressing at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Legislative reforms, rapid social integration processes, the intensification of antisemitic sentiment across Europe and the emergence of modern identities (Zionists, assimilationists, Orthodox, socialists, etc.) compelled Galician political actors to develop models for engaging or opposing the region’s Jewish population. The constructive dimension of these efforts lay in an attempt to critically and comprehensively reflect on the historical experience of Ukrainian-Jewish coexistence and to define clear prospects for the advancement of bilateral relations. A notable contribution in this regard was made by the prominent public and political figure, lawyer Ivan Makukh.

Purpose of the Article is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the Jewish population of Galicia as reflected in the memoir legacy of I. Makukh.

Methodological Framework. The study is grounded in the principles of historicism and objectivity. It applies comparative analysis, content analysis, synthesis, systematization, quantitative and-statistical methods, and generalization to examine the source material.

Results. The analysis enables a reconstruction of I. Makukh’s views on the Jewish population of Galicia. His personal experience of growing up in a multiethnic environment shaped a coherent and consistent view on the status of Galician Jewry and the broader dynamics of Ukrainian-Jewish coexistence. This position remained stable and unchanged throughout his life.

Conclusion. The memoirs of I. Makukh represent a valuable source for understanding the condition of the Jewish population and the nature of interethnic relations in Galicia. They complement the broader corpus of writings by leading Ukrainian public and political figures, and underscore the enduring significance of interethnic dialogue rooted in tolerance. As such, I. Makukh’s reflections offer a clear articulation of both existing and prospective models for Ukrainian-Jewish coexistence.

Traditional folk clothes of velikobychkovsky hutsuly of XIX — the first half of XX century
In the study based upon numerous field materials, literature sources as well as ethnographic, historio-cultural and regional museum collections has been performed complex analysis in traditional folk clothes by Hutzul population of Velyky Bychkiv village in Transcarpathian region. Detailed descriptions of femi­nine and masculine clothing complexes of the mentioned area have been presented. In characterizing of those main attention has been paid to the detail of cut in separate components of dress; cut of feminine shirt has been added as an illustration.

Maternity ritualism by volhynians in publications of the second half XIX to the early XXI cc.
In the article have been considered some basic landmarks for fixing and publication of ethnographic materials on the maternity rites of Volhynia with analytical study in ritual elements, their kinds and territories of origin. The article has also raised a problem of gaps in studies of maternity rites of Ukrainian historio-ethnographic Volhynia.

Daily bread baking of ukrainians in the south-western ethnographical region at the late XIX to early XXI cc.
The paper has dealt with analytic study in prescriptions, signs, customs, methods, ways of selection, procurement and some peculiarities in usage of subsidiary means — water, firewood and leaves in bread baking. The final aim of the mentioned actions had been (and still is) selection of the means and ingredients fit, by their characteristics, for the backing of bread. The paper has demonstrated dependence of bread backing subsi­diary means criteria from the folk nutritional standards and world outlook stereotypes as well as from regional social and economic, natural and geographical factors and peculiarities of material culture.

Wax candle as ukrainian Christmas and epiphany ritualistic text
For the first time in native ethnology the article has brought some results of special study in sign functionality of a wax candle under the context of Ukrainian Christmas and Epiphany ritualistic text (ritualism of Christmas Eve, New Year, Epiphany Eve and Feast of Epiphany). The study has stated extremely high semiotic position of a wax candle as projection of Sun, mediator between the spheres of sacral and prophane elements, symbolic analogue of human existence, apotropy, cultural symbol re-establishing borders of acculturated space.
