Abstract. The national preservation, popularization and development of folk art traditions is an urgent necessity in the modern era of scientific and technological progress. After all, folk art decays.

As a vividexample, there are artistic wood products from the Kyiv region. Nowadays, there are few masters who are engaged in artistic carving, embodying in it artistic folk traditions of previous generations. Some carvers perform works that synthesize amateur and academic manners. A small number of artists in their work are guided by professionalism.

The problem of contemporary art in the Kiev region is the «aging» of folk artists. Therefore, preserving works and studying the creativity of folk masters of the Kiev region is an urgent need of the present.

The purpose of this article. The article describes the current state of development of the artistic wood of the region. The names of the masters of Kyiv region and their works are introduced for the first time in art criticism. The role and significance of the creative work of artists in preservation, revival, popularization and development of artistic wood – is an important component of folk art of Ukraine are considered.

Methods. The research methodology of this article is based on historical, biographical, method of formal analysis and field research methods.

Results. The beginning of the XXI century is a time of active creative transformation of the art of folk masters of Kiev region. Reconsideration of the traditions of woodcutting, interpretation by artists of the world, historical events and phenomena in the material, reproduction of ornamentations of previous generations are features that are clearly reflected in the contemporary folk art of the woodcutting of the Kyiv region, which today, unfortunately, is on the edge of extinction. It will face disappearance without state support.

Conclusion. The study of the experience and creativity of carvers, which by their work contribute to the preservation of Ukrainian artistic wood, is a prerequisite for the conservation, promotion and reproduction of forgotten trade.

In the study based on a wide range of literary materials have been comprehensively characterised field research in Polisia of Ukraine, performed by Russian and Belarusian ethnologists during 1945—1980s as well as Moscow ethnolinguists and other researchers from ethnologic centres of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus in the course of realization of Ethnolinguistic Atlas of Polisia program. Wax candle as ukrainian Christmas and epiphany ritualistic text
For the first time in native ethnology the article has brought some results of special study in sign functionality of a wax candle under the context of Ukrainian Christmas and Epiphany ritualistic text (ritualism of Christmas Eve, New Year, Epiphany Eve and Feast of Epiphany). The study has stated extremely high semiotic position of a wax candle as projection of Sun, mediator between the spheres of sacral and prophane elements, symbolic analogue of human existence, apotropy, cultural symbol re-establishing borders of acculturated space.

Boikos’ pandemonium: categories of evil deceased
In the article have been presented some research-work on peculiarities of Boikos’ traditional demonological notions as for so-called evil deceased; on the basis of field records and ethnological literary sources quite a number of scum categories have been defined as well as essential habits, modes of behavior and functions of these personages of people’s demonology.
