Abstract. The concept of «folk religious art» was not used in Ukraine for more than half a century. Since the 1980s, we have a lot of publications about folk icons and the work of «non-academic» masters who built churches, furnished temples, erected monuments with religious motifs etc. After dismantling of the CPSU, they no longer restricted the books and articles on Christian themes in various fields of folk art. However, the attempts are still unknown to understand the entire religious segment in artistic culture, which was tabooed by the atheistic state for a long time.
The purpose of the study is to offer a general picture and a working model of the specified area. This involves setting and performing a number of tasks, including:
· analysis of the literature on the given issue and a critical review of an applied conceptual and terminological apparatus;
· determination of the morphological components of the studied phenomenon (types and branches of creativity); delineation of socio-psychological differences, since among «non-academic» masters we distinguish amateur, naive, craftsmen and artisans, self-employedand engaged in various organizational formats;
· an attempt to assess the achievements and problems of folk religious art in Ukraine while the 20th—21st centuries compared to the 18th—19th centuries and the achievements of neighboring countries.
The object of the study is multifaceted phenomena relevant to the folk artistic creativity of Ukrainians in the religious sphere, and the subject is the peculiarities of the functioning, perception, coverage and understanding of the folk religious segment in all branches of Ukrainian art.
Scientific novelty consists in the generalization and systematization of previous scientific achievments and an attempt to look at the problem from a new perspective and with the involvement of alternative concepts and terms.
