Abstract. Introduction. The end of the 19th — beginning of the 20th century was a special period in the life of the Ukrainian people. It was the time of national upsurge in the development of Ukrainian art and culture. A feature of this period is the artists’ interest in the national origins of Ukrainian art.
Problem Statement. The subject of the study is artistic culture and Ukrainian art in Galicia. It is investigated in the process of formation of such a special trend in Ukrainian art as the national style.
Purpose is to show the formation of the Ukrainian national style in the art and culture of Galicia at the end of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries.
Methods. In the process of forming a historical retrospective, the dominant method is comparative-historical, and when analyzing art monuments, figurative-stylistic, comparative-typological methods are used.
Results. Artistic culture and art went through several stages of development during the 19th century. The author presents his own periodization of this era, which is being introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. These stages of the development of art and culture of the 19th century culminated in the national revival and flowering of art at the end of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. The peculiarities of this era are the reflection of historical traditions of Ukrainian decorative and applied arts, such as: artistic carving, metal, artistic glass, embroidery and other types. This led to the emergence of a special trend, based on the synthesis of arts, which we call the Ukrainian style, which, along with eclectic imitations of historical forces, was popular in Ukrainian art at the end of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries.
Conclusion. The features of the national style in Galicia of this period were best manifested in sacred art: carved iconostases, liturgical objects, highly artistic stained glass windows by Petro Kholodny the Elder and other authors, etc. The synthesis of arts and other features in the development of artistic culture and art in Galicia at the end of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries is a unique page in world history and awaits its more detailed study.
Keywords: artistic culture, national revival, choreography, decorative and applied arts, embroidery, costume, art glass, jewelry, design, art metal.
