Abstract. The article is devoted to the figure of the outstanding Ukrainian sculptor, teacher, one of the most authoritative representatives of national fine art outside the Motherland Ivan Severa (1891—1971). Today, the scale of his imaginative thinking, wide field of activity require new scientific approaches to understanding of his creative heritage.
The relevance of the article lies in the fact that, for the first time in art science, the issue of the need to develop comprehensive measures to deepen the level of professional qualification of the artist’s work and popularize his name by memorializing places related to his life is raised. In accordance with the set goal, a group of main publications and source resources are considered, which are important for covering the pages of the dynamic biography of I. Severy, his personal contacts with famous Italian, Czech and Ukrainian artists, as well as various aspects of intercultural interactions in artistic practices of the 1920s—1940s. Special attention is paid to the transformation of the creative methodology of the artist in the circumstances of the totalitarian reality in Ukraine. For the first time, materials from the opening of a monument in the village of Novosilky, where the sculptor was born, are being put into scientific circulation.
The object of research is the creative and pedagogical heritage of I. Severa, the subject is the problem of deepening the scientific discourse regarding the place and significance of the artist’s work in the history of Ukrainian fine art of the 20th century and developing forms of honoring his memory in modern Ukrainian society.
The methodological basis of the research is biographical, scientific-reconstructive and scientific-interpretive methods, with the involvement of socio-cultural approaches to the interpretation of the concept of «cultural memory».
