Abstract. The traditions of decorative and applied arts in the Hutsul region hold an important place in Ukraine’s cultural heritage and in the formation of the national artistic tradition. The Kosiv School of Folk Arts has become one of the key centers for the preservation, development, and professional interpretation of these traditions, and its activities play a significant role in the system of arts education.
The relevance of this study stems from the growing interest in preserving and developing the traditions of decorative and applied arts amid globalization and the transformation of cultural practices, as well as the need to understand the role of art education in supporting regional artistic traditions. In this context, the activities of the Kosiv School of Folk Arts and Crafts are of great importance as one of the leading centers for the development of professional art education based on the folk crafts of the Hutsul region.
The aim of this article is to examine the role of the Kosiv School of Folk Arts and Crafts in the preservation, development, and creative interpretation of the traditions of decorative and applied arts in the Carpathian region. The object of the study is the Kosiv School as a cultural and educational center for the formation and transmission of folk artistic traditions; the subject is its educational and artistic principles and methods of integrating traditional crafts into the contemporary artistic environment.
The methodological basis of the study consists of historicalcultural, comparative, and analytical methods, as well as methods of systematization and generalization of scientific and arthistorical sources. This study analyzes the development of the school based on local craft practices in the Carpathian region, its contribution to the professionalization of folk artists, the systematization of traditional techniques and ornamental motifs, as well as the integration of folk art into contemporary design.
The study establishes that the pedagogical model of the Kosiv Art School combines academic art education with a foundation in regional material culture, thereby ensuring continuity across generations of artisans and fostering the preservation of ethnocultural identity. The findings indicate that the Kosiv Art School serves as a center for the preservation of folk crafts and acts as a factor in shaping a national model of art education.
