Abstract. The publication is dedicated to the leading Ukrainian folklorist Vasyl Sokil, and presents his book publications including collections and monographs. These are many field materials collected during expeditions, as well as important analytical and theoretical studies, thus the relevance of the research is underscoredby an attempt of their general overview.

The aim of the article is to present the positions in book format, introduce readers to brief annotations to each of them and their content. Attention is drawn to the scholar reviews on these publications.

Folklore anthologies of various genres, as well as collections of the author’s own oral poetic recordings, were the object of the research. Among archival sources, the epistolary of Tyt Revakovich, introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, deserves attention. Special emphasis is placed on the monographic works of the scholar, mainly related to folk prose including historical legends and stories, narratives about the Holodomor in Ukraine. A folkloristic encyclopedia, reflecting the results of two hundred years of work in this area, also occupies its prominent place. Vasyl Sokil is the initiator and the head of this project, a scientific editor, compiler, and author of many articles. During the presentation of the material chronological, statistical methods, structural analysis, and systematization are used.

The article highlights V. Sokil’s achievements as a folklorist and mentions his awards. It also declares the total number of the scholar’s works, among which book publications take a leading place. Previously published anniversary articles related to the folklorist’s personality are also referenced.

The analysis of V. Sokil’s large-scale folklore heritage allows us to state that the largest part of it is taken up by collections of prose and song traditions. The texts were recorded at different periods from all the regions of Ukraine and from beyond its borders. A significant amount consists of the collector’s own recordings. He was the first who opened up a wide range of the 19th to early 20th-century correspondents’ epistolary and presented the achievements of various representatives of the scientific sphere of the past and present. He left a significant trace in his monographic studies of folklore prose, primarily on social and political topics.

Maternity ritualism by volhynians in publications of the second half XIX to the early XXI cc.
In the article have been considered some basic landmarks for fixing and publication of ethnographic materials on the maternity rites of Volhynia with analytical study in ritual elements, their kinds and territories of origin. The article has also raised a problem of gaps in studies of maternity rites of Ukrainian historio-ethnographic Volhynia.

Boikos’ pandemonium: categories of evil deceased
In the article have been presented some research-work on peculiarities of Boikos’ traditional demonological notions as for so-called evil deceased; on the basis of field records and ethnological literary sources quite a number of scum categories have been defined as well as essential habits, modes of behavior and functions of these personages of people’s demonology.

Daily bread baking of ukrainians in the south-western ethnographical region at the late XIX to early XXI cc.
The paper has dealt with analytic study in prescriptions, signs, customs, methods, ways of selection, procurement and some peculiarities in usage of subsidiary means — water, firewood and leaves in bread baking. The final aim of the mentioned actions had been (and still is) selection of the means and ingredients fit, by their characteristics, for the backing of bread. The paper has demonstrated dependence of bread backing subsi­diary means criteria from the folk nutritional standards and world outlook stereotypes as well as from regional social and economic, natural and geographical factors and peculiarities of material culture.

Wax candle as ukrainian Christmas and epiphany ritualistic text
For the first time in native ethnology the article has brought some results of special study in sign functionality of a wax candle under the context of Ukrainian Christmas and Epiphany ritualistic text (ritualism of Christmas Eve, New Year, Epiphany Eve and Feast of Epiphany). The study has stated extremely high semiotic position of a wax candle as projection of Sun, mediator between the spheres of sacral and prophane elements, symbolic analogue of human existence, apotropy, cultural symbol re-establishing borders of acculturated space.
