Abstract. The biography of the Ukrainian director, actor, journalist, publicist, and critic Oles Stepovyi is supplemented on the basis of the sources found, and his journalistic and publicistic activities on the pages of the Ukrainian Galician press are studied. The purpose of the article was to fill in the gaps in the artist’s biography, to establish the circle of Ukrainian periodicals with which O. Stepovyi collaborated, to reveal new cryptonyms, to determine the genres of the found materials, to analyze their thematic range, and to compile a register. The topic of the article is relevant, since O. Stepovyi’s journalistic and publicistic activities have not been studied separately by contemporary Ukrainian researchers. The novelty of the research is due to the fact that, in addition to the already known ones, 60 publications by O. Stepovyi in Lviv periodicals were introduced into scientific circulation, the biographical information of the journalist was significantly supplemented, and a chronological list of O. Stepovyi’s materials was formed. To achieve the objectives of this study, special scientific methods were used, such as biographical, bibliographic, press clipping, and qualitative content analysis.
Oles Stepovyi (real name and surname: Lev Glova, 1905—1933) played in the theater troupes of Mykola Aidarov, Nina Boyko, and Olha Mitkevych. He was a co-creator of the first revue theater in Eastern Galicia. In 1931, he became the artistic director of the Zahrava Theater, coined the name of the group, reformed and modernized its stage repertoire. At the same time, O. Stepovyi realized himself as a writer and journalist. He started as a feuilletonist in the satirical magazine Ziz, later he was a correspondent for the newspaper Novy Chas, contributed to the periodicals Dilo and Nash Prapor, and published more than thirty travelogues about towns and villages in Galicia, about twenty essays, feuilletons and discussion articles. At the same time, he was an active contributor to the Kino magazine, edited its theater department, and published more than ten problematic articles on Ukrainian theater and cinema. It is summarized that O. Stepovyi was not only a talented theater director, but also had a talent for reporting, proved himself a subtle feuilletonist and a brilliant publicist, and contributed to the development of professional theater journalism in Galicia.
