TO OKSANA OMELYANIVNA FRANKO’S 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF BIRTH. JUBILEE WORD

Abstract. Jubilee article is devoted to commemorating the 80th anniversary of the birth of the recognized Ukrainian historian, ethnologist, archivist, teacher of higher education, doctor of historical sciences, professor of the department of ethnology, of the faculty of history, of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv Oksana Omelyanivna Franko.

As an archeographer, she prepared the texts and comments for print and published a number of source publications. It is worth mentioning the collection of documents and materials «Kyrylo-Mefodiyivs’ke Tovarystvo» [«Cyril-Mefodius Society»] and publication «O.F. Kistyakivs’kyi. Shchodennyk (1874—1885)» [«O.F. Kistyakivs’kyi. Diary (1874—1885)»], which under the general serial name «Ukrainian National Renaissance in Documents and Memoirs» in 1996 were nominated for the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology. In 1998 the publication «O.F. Kistyakivs’kyi. Shchodennyk (1874—1885)», was awarded with the Mykhailo Hrushevs’kyi’s Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Franko is the author of more than 200 scientific, scientific-popular, methodological works, chapters, paragraphs in educational textbooks on ethnology, encyclopedic articles, etc. Among other works, it is advisable to focus an attention on two most important monographs «Fedir Vovk» (New York: UVAN, 1997) and «Fedir Kindratovych Vovk — a scholar and public figure» (Kyiv: European University edition, 2000).

Oksana Omelyanivna has research publications in France, England, USA, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland and other countries. O. Franko is working effectively and enthusiastically in the Scientific society of T. Shevchenko (NTSh), she takes an active part in the historical, ethnological, archaeological, art-study international and Ukrainian scientific conferences and in the forums devoted to the study of Ivan Franko’s creative work.

Scholar interests of our professor: the study of the history of Ukrainian ethnology, the research of sources for the history of Ukraine, the scientific heritage of F. Vovk, I. Franko, Vadym and Danylo Shcherbakivs’kyi and other scholars.

The article focuses on the social and public activities of the O. Franko as the initiator and co-organizer of the I. Franko Family Museum in Kalush (1992). The author of this article emphasized the active participation of our researcher in the social and political movement of the 70ts and 80ts years of the twentieth century, her government awards.

Wax candle as ukrainian Christmas and epiphany ritualistic text
For the first time in native ethnology the article has brought some results of special study in sign functionality of a wax candle under the context of Ukrainian Christmas and Epiphany ritualistic text (ritualism of Christmas Eve, New Year, Epiphany Eve and Feast of Epiphany). The study has stated extremely high semiotic position of a wax candle as projection of Sun, mediator between the spheres of sacral and prophane elements, symbolic analogue of human existence, apotropy, cultural symbol re-establishing borders of acculturated space.

Boikos’ pandemonium: categories of evil deceased
In the article have been presented some research-work on peculiarities of Boikos’ traditional demonological notions as for so-called evil deceased; on the basis of field records and ethnological literary sources quite a number of scum categories have been defined as well as essential habits, modes of behavior and functions of these personages of people’s demonology.

Daily bread baking of ukrainians in the south-western ethnographical region at the late XIX to early XXI cc.
The paper has dealt with analytic study in prescriptions, signs, customs, methods, ways of selection, procurement and some peculiarities in usage of subsidiary means — water, firewood and leaves in bread baking. The final aim of the mentioned actions had been (and still is) selection of the means and ingredients fit, by their characteristics, for the backing of bread. The paper has demonstrated dependence of bread backing subsi­diary means criteria from the folk nutritional standards and world outlook stereotypes as well as from regional social and economic, natural and geographical factors and peculiarities of material culture.

Maternity ritualism by volhynians in publications of the second half XIX to the early XXI cc.
In the article have been considered some basic landmarks for fixing and publication of ethnographic materials on the maternity rites of Volhynia with analytical study in ritual elements, their kinds and territories of origin. The article has also raised a problem of gaps in studies of maternity rites of Ukrainian historio-ethnographic Volhynia.
