Abstract. The first attempt was made to examine the visual collection of the Museum of the National Academy of Sciences. The history of the creation of the unique collection of the National Academy of Sciences museum, its transfer to the Lviv State Ethnographic Museum and the Institute of Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is highlighted. The stages of the formation of a visual collection, its subject are highlighted. The main focus is on postcards, their classification by subject, it is shown that the postcards are the epistolary legacy of famous personalities of that time.

It was found out which publishing houses and photographers produced the postcards, who was their customer on a certain topic, and what information they contained about Ukraine. It is shown how, on the basis of a short open text of a postcard, it is possible to obtain information about personalities, the historical past; to study the culture of communication, events and problems; how Ukrainian communities and societies used photographic prints and postcards to highlight socio-political processes that took place at the end of the 19th — mid-20th century. It was concluded that based on the postcards, it is possible to trace the role they played in preserving or destroying the self-identification of Ukrainians.

The purpose of the article is to inform about the visual collection of the Museum of the National Academy of Sciences; highlight the role it played in preserving the memory of the past; show that postcards are an important source for the study of architecture in all its manifestations, folk art, material and spiritual culture.
