Abstract. The article analyzes the historiography of traditional pottery during the period of Ukraine’s independence based on materials from leading centers — Kosiv and Opishne (late 20th century — 2020s). The source base of the study is outlined. The relevance of this topic is determined by the priority areas of art studies, which include the study of the current state and development prospects of various genres of Ukrainian decorative and applied arts — specifically pottery — and the advancement of folk art theory. In this regard, there is an urgent need to systematize and analyze scholarly research on the contemporary period of Ukrainian pottery to facilitate further in-depth study regarding the transformation of ethno-artistic traditions within the sociocultural dynamics of the 21st century.
The purpose of this article is to determine the current state of research on the topic and to clarify the art-studies issues surrounding traditional pottery during Ukraine’s era of independence, focusing on its leading centers — Kosiv and Opishne.
Such an approach will contribute to the identification and introduction into scientific circulation of little-studied aspects, covering a significant corpus of new or less well-known art-studiesliterature and factual material collected by the author during field observations and the study of modern ceramics from Kosiv and Opishne, stored in museum and private collections. The object of research is the works of scientists on the development of Ukrainian pottery since the end of the 20th century and the issue of ethno-artistic tradition. The subject is the peculiarities of methodology of scientific understanding of modern Ukrainian pottery, the ceramics of Kosiv and Opishne as leading centers and peculiar models of its development. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, systematics, the use of historiographical, source-based methods, and scientific and critical analysis and synthesis of materials.
Results. The literature on contemporary Ukrainian pottery accumulated over the 35 years of Independence is diverse and addresses various aspects of modern traditional ceramics, particularly those of Kosiv and Opishne. The majority of publications examine the subject from a historical perspective. Only a few studies attempt a theoretical analysis of contemporary artistic processes in Ukrainian pottery.
Keywords: historiography, source base, Ukrainian ceramics, pottery, Kosiv, Opishne, tradition, innovation.
