Abstract. March 19, 2026 marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of a famous figure of the interwar period in the historical and ethnographic region of Volhynia — the Polish historian Jakub Hoffmann. Therefore, the relevance of this article is due to the need to honor the memory of the scientist on this occasion.
The novelty of the publication lies in the fact that information about J. Hoffmann is presented on the basis of the systematization of materials devoted to his activities from Ukrainian and Polish encyclopedic and reference publications.
The purpose of this research is to highlight the encyclopedic and reference aspect of the presentation of the figure of J. Hoffmann.
The object of the study is articles dedicated to the scientist in encyclopedic and reference publications, and the subject is their distinctive component.
The methodological basis of the article is the methods of historiographic analysis, synthesis and comparative-historical approach.
Upon completion of the presentation, a conclusion is made about the need to present the figure of J. Hoffmann as an ethnographer, with a specification of the areas of his activity in this niche and the coverage of his ethnographic work on the pages of encyclopedic and reference publications. It is stated that the author of the article continued a comprehensive scientific historical and biographical study of the figure of J. Hoffmann as an ethnographer, established the reasons for his interest in the traditional folk culture of Ukrainians, clarified the areas of ethnographic interests and contribution to the development of ethnographic science in Ukraine.
