Abstract. This article is dedicated to the analysis of the «doll’s funeral» rite and the tradition of lamentation that accompanies it, taking place on the Ukrainian-Moldavian borderlands and is meant to stop the longtime drought. The basis for the research are the results of 7 expeditions made during 2005-2009 on the territory of 10 regions of Moldova and 7 regions of Vinnytska, Khmelnytska and Chernivetska oblasts in Ukraine. The work analyzes the time of the rite, its general structure, the system of actors, the subject equipment of the «funeral», the place and functions of the verbal component in the ceremony and its textological peculiarities. Particular attention is paid to those factors that contributed to the natural entry of the foreign rite and folklore into a Ukrainian ritual tradition: the similarity of the traditional funeral rituals of Ukrainians and Moldovans, the good preservation of the funeral tradition and archaic notions of death in the territory of the Ukrainian-Moldovan border, the presence of a number of typologically similar pluvial rites of the two adjacent peoples, the world-view preservation of the connection between the ideas about the regulation of moisture, on the one hand, and death, the other world, the earth — on the other. Taking the general concept of a pluvial ritual from their neighbors (keeping the doll in the ground, watering it), the Ukrainians, however, focused primarily on their own tradition of burial of the deceased. Such orientation to the specific Ukrainian model of the funeral is most closely related to the accompanying mourning, which in the Ukrainian villages of the contact areas preserves in general the genre model of the traditional Ukrainian funeral cry.
Keywords: the «doll’s funeral», pluvial rituals, lamentation, Ukrainian-Moldavian borderlands.
