Abstract. Anthropological studies are an important component of folk studies, because without coverage of the anthropological features of the ethnos, its complex characteristics are impossible. In the first third of the 20th century, one of the leading anthropological centers in Europe was Lviv University, where in particular the Lviv Anthropological School of Professor Jan Czekanowski was formed. In publications about the scientist, the main attention is paid to his scientific works. This determines the relevance of the topic of the proposed article, the purpose of which is a comprehensive description of the peculiarities of teaching anthropological disciplines at the University of Lviv since the late 19th century (when the relevant courses first appear in the educational process) until 1939 (before the transformation of the university during the Soviet occupation of Lviv).

The object of the research are anthropological courses of teachers of Lviv University — Benedykt Dybowski, Ivan Rakovskyi, Jan Czekanowski, Bolesіaw Rosiсski, Stanisіaw Klimek. The subject of research is the topics and content of the relevant courses, their features in comparison with anthropological disciplines in other university centers of anthropology (in particular, with the Jagiellonian and Poznan universities).

The source base of the research is the official statistical and reference publications of Lviv University for the 1890s—1930s, as well as the works of its teachers. These sources are processed using comparative-historical and typological methods.

As a result of the study, the following conclusions were made. The first anthropological lectures at the University of Lviv were given by B. Dybowski within the field of «Zoology» (at the end of the 19th century they were attended by a student of the Faculty of Philosophy, I. Rakovskyi). Lecture courses on anthropology by I. Rakovskyi already as a teacher of Ukrainian university courses and the Ukrainian University in Lviv belonged to the direction of «Natural Sciences». Consideration of anthropological issues within the natural or medical sciences has been traditional for many universities, including Jagiellonian and Poznaс. Instead, J. Czekanowski at Lviv University focused mostly on his anthropological disciplines on humanities students. This tradition was adopted by his student K. Stojanowski as an associate professor at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Poznaс.

In the courses of methodological orientation, J. Czekanowski and his students singled out quantitative methods during anthropological research.

Keywords: anthropology, Lviv University, lectures, practical classes, Benedykt Dybowski, Ivan Rakovskyi, Jan Czekanowski, Bolesіaw Rosiсski, Stanisіaw Klimek.
