HALYNA STELMASCHUK: TWENTY YEARS OF HEADING THE ART HISTORY AND THEORY DEPARTMENT

Abstract. Since 2003 till nowadays, Academician of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine, Doctor of Art History, Professor Halyna Stelmashchuk has headed the Department of Art History and Theory at the Lviv National Academy of Arts. Over the course of twenty years, the scholarly interests of the Art critic changed, the priorities of art education changed, but the academic values ​​of Galina Stelmashchuk remained unchanged: academic freedom, academic integrity, barrier-free thinking, professionalism, and openness to interaction.

The purpose of this study are the values that were reflected through Halyna Stelmashchuk’s activities at the Academy of Arts. The research, based on a methodology of retrospective description and comparative analysis, discusses the preservation and evaluation of the department and its Academic traditions, as promoted by Halyna Stelmashchuk throughout the years. The sources for this article include publications by Halyna Stelmashchuk, reflections on the development of Art education, memoirs and critical remarks about her activities, and recollections by her current students.

The article analyzes the professional interests of Halyna Stelmashchuk, which transformed because of political, economic, and cultural changes, and pointed to the universal ethical and aesthetical priorities that today represent not only the personality of the world-renowned Art critic, but also the Department of Art History and Theory, the life of the Academy, and the Artistic environment of the region in general.

The Scientific novelty of the article are focused on the future. The practical significance, related to the long-term experience of the Academician of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine, professor, Art researcher, Head of the Department of Art History and Theory, teacher, and sincere colleague — Halyna Stelmashchuk can become a kind of guide for followers of the department and its academic traditions and strengthen new relevant strategic visions in the future.

On bessarabian and moldavian ukrainians in the studies of historical ethnography
The article has thrown some light upon a sum of scientific findings got during XIX to XXI cc. in historio-ethnographic studies of Bessarabia and Moldavian Ukrainians. In the article have been presented some research-work on peculiarities of Boikos’ traditional demonological notions as for so-called evil deceased; on the basis of field records and ethnological literary sources quite a number of scum categories have been defined as well as essential habits, modes of behavior and functions of these personages of people’s demonology.

Wax candle as ukrainian Christmas and epiphany ritualistic text
For the first time in native ethnology the article has brought some results of special study in sign functionality of a wax candle under the context of Ukrainian Christmas and Epiphany ritualistic text (ritualism of Christmas Eve, New Year, Epiphany Eve and Feast of Epiphany). The study has stated extremely high semiotic position of a wax candle as projection of Sun, mediator between the spheres of sacral and prophane elements, symbolic analogue of human existence, apotropy, cultural symbol re-establishing borders of acculturated space.

On field exploration of russian and belarusian ethnologists and etnolinguists in Ukrainian Polisia 1945—1980s
In the study based on a wide range of literary materials have been comprehensively characterised field research in Polisia of Ukraine, performed by Russian and Belarusian ethnologists during 1945—1980s as well as Moscow ethnolinguists and other researchers from ethnologic centres of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus in the course of realization of Ethnolinguistic Atlas of Polisia program. Particular attention has been paid to geography, methods, themes and research results of scientific projects.
