Abstract. Anniversary essay is dedicated to the famous scholar Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor, Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Head of the Folklore Studies Department of the Ethnology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Vasyl Sokil. His life and creative career, as well as bibliography of works for the last five years are presented in a condensed form.

The subject of the study was the biography, work and scientific activity of the folklorist. The emphasis is placed on the legacy of the last period.

The source base of the proposed study was both individual book publications and articles in various editions. Monographs and collections are a significant part of the scientific work. From more than twenty large format items – three monographs, one large-scale scientific-reference publication, the rest are folklore collections. The author dealt with various ethnological issues, ranging from regional to national. It is about the legends and retellings of the Carpathian Ukrainians, historical retellings from princely times to the guerrillas period. The study of folklore prose about three famines in Ukraine in the twentieth century is worth special attention. The first national encyclopedia dedicated to the bicentenary of Ukrainian folklore studies appeared under the leadership of V. Sokil. It contains information about researchers and collectors of oral literature, journals, scientific institutions, genres, theory, poetics, and so on.

The articles of the author are multidimensional – the history of folklore studies, poetics, genre studies. They solve new problems that have not yet been studied or were just partially solved. An important aspect of his scholarly activity of the last period is the elucidation of certain information on the history of church figures, the epistolary heritage of T. Revakovych, and many other correspondents. Now he is working hard on the folklore of the twentieth century, an almost uncharted array about the activities of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists-Ukrainian Insurgent Army, the eviction of Ukrainians to Siberia, the popular resistance movement against totalitarian regimes in the 1940s and 1960s.

An important page in the scientific biography of the folklorist is the continuation of the bibliographic list of works from which we learn about the dynamics, the range of research interests.

Keywords: biography, scientific activity, monograph, folklore collection, folk prose, songs.
