Abstract. Sound recordings of musical folklore — one of the forms of preservation and popularization of traditional culture among the Ukrainian diaspora of North America. Musical folklore samples are recorded in authentic form, as well as traditional motifs and intonations are embodied in new styles of mass culture (secondary musical folklore). Most of the recordings refer to secondary performance, presenting stylistic synthesis in the form of new compositions based on quoting and reintroducing traditional folklore and pop music. The purpose of the work is to identify features and ways of the transformation of musical folklore traditions in the performing area of the Ukrainian diaspora in the USA and Canada through the analysis of sound recordings of secondary musical folklore.
The research methodology includes historical and source study methods, together with the analysis of the discography of performers of the Ukrainian diaspora in the USA and Canada.
Results. The studied recordings present the arrangements of folk songs in pop, rock, jazz, fusion, world music, etc. performed by the most prominent ukrainian soloists, vocal and instrumental groups from Canada and the United States (Kvitka Сisyk, Yana Bilyk, V. Popadiuk and «Papa Duke», «Mickey and Bunny», «D‑Drifters-5», «Rushnychok», «Syny Stepiv», «Veseli Chasy», «Izmarahd», «Soniashnyk», «Promin», «Burya», «Kubasonics», «Milleniа», «Tut I Tam», «Ukrainia», «DoVira»). The interaction of Ukrainian folklore and various trends and styles of pop music is displayed through the processing of folk songs, the citation of musical and folklore material, the creation of original compositions on folklore basis (intonations, volumes, texts, techniques of playing and singing). Conclusion. The process of synthesis of ukrainian musical folklore and mass pop music began at the end of the twentieth century and today it continues in the most expressive ways of transformation.
