Abstract. Introduction. The article analyses the ethnographic dominants in the discourse of Dmytro Dontsov’s linguistic personality through the prism of transformed phraseological units.
Problem Statement. The main focus is on the politician’s discursive practice, which makes it possible to reconstruct his background knowledge and linguistic consciousness that ultimately shape his linguistic worldview.
The aim of the work is to analyse Ukrainian phraseological units that the politician transfers to ideological texts or modifies them in various ways. The main aspects of the study are: a) analysis of original phraseological units in D. Dontsov’s intellectual practice; b) demonstration of the transformation of the meaning of phraseological units in political discourse.
Methodology and methods. The methodology of the study is a synthesis of general scientific (historiographical, cultural-historical analysis, observation, systematisation, etc.) and special linguistic methods (component, constructive, contextual, discursive and linguo-psychobiographical analysis).
Results. It is established that Dontsov’s idiomatic thinking, skill and extraordinary linguistic creativity are demonstrated by transformed phraseological units based on a) changes in components (without changing the meaning); b) changes in components and the addition of new words (expansion of the meaning); c) contamination. It is illustrated that the transformed phraseological units in Dontsov’s political discourse are the result of his creativity and emotional and figurative understanding of a particular political situation. Knowledge of Ukrainian history, literature and culture became the basis for the formation of the Ukrainian language code, as evidenced by the politician’s texts.
Conclusion. The original corpus of transformed phraseological units in Dontsov’s discourse contains a number of pragmatic goals (influencing the reader’s emotions, informing about a certain phenomenon, attitude to reality), therefore the cognitive factor is inseparable from the pragmatic one. It is determined that political transformed phraseological units provide a vision of the political situation in Ukraine and shape worldview positions.
