THE INSTITUTIONAL DIMENSION OF ROMAN YATSIV’S WORK: THE JOURNAL «NARODOZNAVCHI ZOSHYTY»

Abstract. The article comprehensively analyzes the institutional dimension of the activities of the prominent Ukrainian scholar, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Roman Yatsiv in the context of the thirty-year development of the publication of the Institute of Ethnology of the NAS of Ukraine — the journal «The Ethnology Notebooks» («Narodoznavchi Zoshyty»).

The relevance of this topic is defined by the scholar’s 70th birthday anniversary, which offers an opportunity to re-examine his body of work and assess his contribution to the development of the humanities. The object of the study is Roman Yatsiv’s contribution to the development of domestic humanities discourse through his scholarly-organizational and editorial activities; the subject of the study is the process of the conceptual and structural-content development of the journal «Narodoznavchi Zoshyty» (Ethnological Notebooks), which has become a significant platform for presenting research in ethnology, history, art studies, cultural studies, folklore studies, and museology.

The research methodology is based on the principles of systematicity and objectivity, as well as on bibliographic and analytical methods.

The key role of Roman Yatsiv as the permanent executive secretary of the publication from the very beginning of its foundation is investigated. Special attention is paid to Roman Yatsiv’s own scientific legacy on the pages of the journal, where he recorded historical and cultural processes and modeled modern vectors of the humanities. It is substantiated that his publications contributed to the de-ideologization of the perception of many figures of national culture and the introduction of unknown sources into scientific circulation. The scholar’s systematic research of the activities of emigrant art associations of the 20th century (the «Spikyi» circle), as well as the work of Ukrainian emigrant artists (Hryhorii Kruk, Halyna Novakivska, Volodymyr Prokuda) and domestic figures (Vasyl Masiutyn, Yaroslav Skakun, Oleh Sydor) is analyzed.

Conclusions. Roman Yatsiv’s multifaceted work as a researcher, critic, and editor drove a transformation in the methodological parameters of domestic humanities scholarship. The scholar’s seminal works marked a conceptual shift from factographic description to a profound intellectual history of culture — viewed as an instrument of self-awareness and nation-building.

Maternity ritualism by volhynians in publications of the second half XIX to the early XXI cc.
In the article have been considered some basic landmarks for fixing and publication of ethnographic materials on the maternity rites of Volhynia with analytical study in ritual elements, their kinds and territories of origin. The article has also raised a problem of gaps in studies of maternity rites of Ukrainian historio-ethnographic Volhynia.

Wax candle as ukrainian Christmas and epiphany ritualistic text
For the first time in native ethnology the article has brought some results of special study in sign functionality of a wax candle under the context of Ukrainian Christmas and Epiphany ritualistic text (ritualism of Christmas Eve, New Year, Epiphany Eve and Feast of Epiphany). The study has stated extremely high semiotic position of a wax candle as projection of Sun, mediator between the spheres of sacral and prophane elements, symbolic analogue of human existence, apotropy, cultural symbol re-establishing borders of acculturated space.

On bessarabian and moldavian ukrainians in the studies of historical ethnography
The article has thrown some light upon a sum of scientific findings got during XIX to XXI cc. in historio-ethnographic studies of Bessarabia and Moldavian Ukrainians. In the pre­sent paper has been given author’s answer to the problem of lacking progress as for the numerous themes concerning Ukrainians. State and achievements of the research-works in Ukrainians’ material and spiritual culture by the scientists of Moldavia and Ukraine through the years of independence has been exposed.

Daily bread baking of ukrainians in the south-western ethnographical region at the late XIX to early XXI cc.
The paper has dealt with analytic study in prescriptions, signs, customs, methods, ways of selection, procurement and some peculiarities in usage of subsidiary means — water, firewood and leaves in bread baking. The final aim of the mentioned actions had been (and still is) selection of the means and ingredients fit, by their characteristics, for the backing of bread. The paper has demonstrated dependence of bread backing subsi­diary means criteria from the folk nutritional standards and world outlook stereotypes as well as from regional social and economic, natural and geographical factors and peculiarities of material culture.
